DARIEN, Ill. (WLS) -- A 17-year-old Willowbrook boy who plead guilty to a hate crime against a Sikh man was sentenced Wednesday to two years of probation, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

In September, the teen repeatedly punched Inderjit Singh Mukkar in suburban Darien after a traffic altercation.

Mukkar lost consciousness and had broken bones in his face. He said the boy also yelled racial slurs.

The teen was originally sentenced to felony aggravated battery, but the felony hate crime charge was added after an investigation of the incident, officials said.

In addition to probation, the judge ordered the defendant to perform 200 hours of community service, part of which must be serving the Sikh community, pay $4,869.50 in restitution and undergo counseling as deemed necessary by the Probation Department.
