Prolific garage burglar hits North Side apartment building again

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A prolific North Side apartment burglar has hit Lakeview apartment building garage for a second time. The two break-ins are just two weeks apart, utilize a similar M.O. and hit all the same victims. Police say it's all part of a larger North Side crime spree.

Police say the suspect's prolific crime spree spans at least six North Side residential buildings. Police say the suspect uses a pry bar to gain entry through a lobby or back doors. Then, in the parking garage, he smashes windows and steals items from cars.

Additional surveillance cameras were going up outside and inside the garage where the crimes occurred, at an apartment building located in the 900-block of West Belmont.

"Speechless," is how Will Song describes his state. "Just disgusted and speechless."

Song's Nissan minivan is among several vehicles here that have been burglarized twice in two weeks.

The first break-in took place on April 19. Then, last weekend, it happened again.

"He took my gym bag the first time," Song says. "I got a new gym bag and new shoes. And then he took it again."

At one building the suspect was seen wheeling away a shopping cart full of loot.

"If he's been doing this for a while, he's obviously pretty good at it," says Jimmy Deeb, a resident of the burglarized building. "If he hasn't been caught yet, he's obviously pretty good at it."

"I think it's one of those things where maybe he wants to get caught," Song says.

The owner of this building declined to comment, but Song says the owner, in addition to installing more cameras, offered to pay for his vehicle repairs after the second incident.
