Amur tiger dies at Lincoln Park Zoo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Lincoln Park Zoo is mourning the loss of an 18-year-old Amur tiger, Molly.

The tiger was euthanized on Wednesday after her health and quality of life rapidly deteriorated, the zoo said. Zoo officials said Molly was showing evidence of age-related discomfort and illness over the past few weeks.

Molly was born at the Lincoln Park Zoo on Nov. 16, 1997, living all but three years of her life in Chicago.

"Despite her age, Molly would frequently roam her habitat and powerfully vocalize, much to the enjoyment of both staff and guests," said General Curator Dave Bernier. "Over the years, Molly developed very strong, trusting bonds with her keepers and most enjoyed her time quietly lounging or exuding her playful side."

Female Amur tigers have a median life expectancy of 14.3 years and Molly was the second-oldest female Amur tiger within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums population.
