The last surviving search and rescue dog from the attacks on September 11, 2001, has died.

The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department in Cypress, Texas says Bretagne (pronounced Britney) was a founding canine member of its search and rescue team in 2000.

She joined members of Texas Task Force One to search for people in the rubble of the World Trade Center, later responding to disasters like Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Even Texas Governor Greg Abbott thanked Bretagne for her service in a tweet.

For her 16th birthday, Bretagne was honored for her service by some of New York's biggest dog lovers.

Her big birthday trip to the Big Apple started with a hero's welcome at the dog-friendly 1 Hotel Central Park. The day continued with the viewing of a personalized billboard in Times Square, a frolic in Hudson River Park and a big surprise party.
