Chicago police fatally shoot bank robbery suspect in Archer Heights
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police fatally shot an armed bank robbery suspect on the city's Southwest Side Monday morning.
Police said a Byline Bank branch in the 4900-block of S. Archer was robbed just after 10:30 a.m. Responding to a hold-up alarm, 8th District officers chased the suspect on foot through the quiet Archer Heights neighborhood.
Resident Ricardo Banuelos said he saw officers swarm the quiet neighborhood with their guns drawn, then heard four shots.
Police said the officers caught up with the suspect in an alley in the 4900-block of S. Karlov.
"The officers chased the subject down a gangway at which time the subject turned towards officers with a weapon. One of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the offender," Supt. Johnson said.
Johnson said the suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released his name.
Johnson said the offender was also a suspect in another robbery at another Byline Bank branch in the 6200-block of S. Austin on Saturday.
A handgun was recovered from the scene. Chicago police said they are assisting the FBI as it continues to investigate the bank robbery.
CPD said the officer involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, the standard protocol for all officer-involved shootings.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the police shooting.
