Rivera killed in accidental friendly fire incident in June, officials say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago police officer who investigators say accidentally shot and killed his partner, Officer Krystal Rivera, earlier this year is now under investigation for allegedly attacking an off-duty female officer, a police report shows.
According to a police report filed in a Sunday night alleged bar attack in Wicker Park, a female officer told investigators she was with friends, and the suspect had no idea she was a Chicago police officer.
She told investigators her alleged attacker is an off-duty police officer, identified in the police report as the very same officer who shot and killed his police partner, Rivera, on a call earlier this summer.
According to the police report obtained by the ABC7 I-Team, the woman told police she was waiting for a rideshare when the off-duty male officer and another woman approached her. He allegedly demanded the female officer delete videos she had on her phone. Then, the two allegedly hit the woman.
By the time the call came, it had been hours since the alleged attack on the busy Wicker Park sidewalk Sunday night. Through a bloodied, split lip at Rush hospital, a 29-year-old police officer filed a police report of her own to colleagues who'd responded.
The female officer said she had been standing outside DSTRKT Bar and Grill on North Milwaukee Avenue, off-duty and waiting for a rideshare, when she was approached by a man and woman "about a video/videos she had taken in the bar."
The police report explained the victim told police "the offenders demanded she delete the videos that were taken on her phone."
The officer said the verbal fight turned physical, when she says the man and woman jumped and beat her in the face before strangers helped pull her to safety.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability says they are investigating the incident.
The man identified in the police report is the very same officer who shot and killed Officer Krystal Rivera while responding to a call on June 5. Chicago police maintain that officer fired accidentally.
As the I-Team reported last month, a 2024 disciplinary report from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability said the officer who shot and killed Officer Rivera had five previous complaints of misconduct where findings were sustained. And as a result, the officer faced three suspensions and two reprimands in just four years with CPD. Two of the incidents were deemed "preventable accidents."

The officer is already on paid leave for the shooting earlier this year that killed Officer Rivera.
ABC7 Chicago has not named the officer because he is not criminally charged in either case. He is not in custody.
