Child critically injured in Lansing apartment fire, officials say

LANSING, Ill. (WLS) -- A child was critically injured in a south suburban apartment fire on Monday night, officials said.

The Lansing Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the 2900-block of Bernice Road around 7:30 p.m.

There, first responders saw heavy smoke billowing from a two-story building with a juvenile victim trapped inside. Additional departments were brought in to battle the fire.

Crews rescued the victim under heavy fire conditions and extinguished the flames within 30 minutes.

The juvenile was transported to Munster Community Hospital before being taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where they are in critical condition.

A Lansing police officer was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation before being released on Monday night.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
