There, first responders saw heavy smoke billowing from a two-story building with a juvenile victim trapped inside. Additional departments were brought in to battle the fire.

Crews rescued the victim under heavy fire conditions and extinguished the flames within 30 minutes.

The juvenile was taken to Munster Community Hospital before being taken to Comer Children's Hospital. The child later died.

"The Village of Lansing and the men and women of our Department offer our deepest condolences to the family during this tragic time," fire officials said.

A Lansing police officer was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation before being released on Monday night.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
