CHICAGO (WLS) -- An armed suspect shot and robbed two women in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood early Saturday, police said.

Chicago police said it happened near West Randolph and North Clinton streets just before 1 a.m.

The West Loop neighborhood is in shock after the brazen robbery and shooting.

A male suspect, whose age was not immediately known, got out of a white SUV and approached two women, 21 and 33, on the sidewalk, police said.

Police said the suspect demanded the women's valuables and took a purse from one of them before firing multiple shots. He then returned to the SUV and fled the scene.

The Chicago Fire Department treated both women on the scene. The 21-year-old, shot in the knee, and the 33-year-old, grazed in the hip, were taken to local hospitals in fair to good condition, CPD said.

An anonymous witness described to ABC7 what he saw and heard.

"Like maybe six or seven shots, but I thought well that sounds like and then started hearing sirens coming from the area, so I looked out the window and saw all the police cars up and down the street," the witness said.

Saturday afternoon, there was concern among some West Loop residents.

"That is so surprising and really scary, especially since they complied and did, like, what the person asked, and it seems really senseless," resident Shavana Green said.

As expected, the violence has left some on edge.

"It's scary, because I could literally happen anywhere... could happen at the safe parts," Green said. "It can happen in the other parts."

No arrests have been made and no one is in custody.

Area Three detectives are investigating the incident. Police did not immediately provide further information.
