Driver saved from burning car after Loop rollover crash

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two Good Samaritans saved a man from a fiery wreck Wednesday night near Chicago's Museum Campus.

Police said a Buick LaCrosse sped up to pass a Jeep Cherokee around 10 p.m. Wednesday at Columbus Drive and Roosevelt Road near the entrance to Lake Shore Drive. The driver of the Buick lost control. The car hit a curb, a guard rail and the Jeep before it flipped and burst into flames.

The two men who rescued the driver of the Buick have military training and didn't hesitate to jump in and help. Tony Genovese and Jeremy Adkins are recruiters for the Army National Guard.

"We tried to talk to him. We saw his car start to light on fire. So we basically pulled him out of the car," Genovese said.

"The driver was responsive to himself but he wasn't responsive to us. Tony grabbed the window, pulled it down, unlocked the door, secured the driver and pulled him out," Adkins said.

Four people were involved in the crash: the 35-year-old driver of the Buick, his male passenger and two women who were in the Jeep. Three of them were critically injured. One person was seriously hurt.

Police issued the driver of the Buick citations for failure to stay in a lane, failure to reduce speed and driving without insurance.
