Meet the adorable, red ruffed lemur born at the San Diego Zoo

A cute, red ruffed lemur was born as the San Diego Zoo on May 18. It's the first time the animal has been born at the zoo in 13 years.

According to the zoo's blog, the lemur weighed 6.6 ounces and has been gaining about one-third of an ounce a day. The zoo says the infant's mom, Morticia, has proven to be a great mom to the lemur.

"During his first month, we expect him to be exploring outside of his nest, with Morticia watching closely," the zoo said.

Red ruffed lemurs are rare: They are only found in the Masoala Peninsula in Madagascar, and the animal is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species.

The red ruffed lemur infant can be seen at the zoo when their Africa Rocks exhibit opens in summer 2017.
