ST. CHARLES, Ill. (WLS) -- A man was killed in a fire in west suburban St. Charles Sunday morning, officials said.

Firefighters responded to a fire reported at 104 South Third Avenue around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The blaze broke out in a second-floor rental unit. The person who lives in the first-floor unit smelled smoke, got out of the building and called 911.

An initial report said someone was trapped inside the home, officials said. When firefighters arrived, they were able to locate the victim in the second-floor unit and brought him outside.

Paramedics confirmed at the scene that the victim had died. His identity will be released by the Kane County Coroner's office once his family is notified.

Crews had the flames under control within 15 minutes. No firefighters were injured.

Fire officials said the loss is estimated at $50,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
