2 children killed after carjacking, crash in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA -- Two children were killed and three other people were injured - including two adults and another child - after a carjacking led to a crash late Friday morning in the Tioga section of North Philadelphia.

The crash happened around 11:15 a.m. at the intersection of Germantown Avenue and West Allegheny.

Police say it began at 6th and Huntingdon when a woman was carjacked at gunpoint by two men. The men forced the woman into the back seat, police said, and drove off.

However, for an unknown reason, the carjacker lost control of the white Toyota SUV and hit the group of five people who were standing on the corner.

One of the children hit was pronounced dead on the scene. Another child was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

The other child and two adults - including the driver who was carjacked - are in critical condition.

Police say the suspects fled the scene and are still being sought.

SUSPECT #1: Described as a black male wearing a white t-shirt and basketball shorts.

SUSPECT #2: Described as a Hispanic male wearing an orange shirt and basketball shorts.

Police are offering a $40,000 reward for any tips that lead to an arrest and conviction.

In addition, police are urging any businesses with surveillance cameras that might have caught any activity between the carjacking scene at 6th and Huntingdon and the crash scene at Germantown Avenue and West Allegheny to give them a call immediately.

"We have a tragedy here. We will use all the resources at our disposal to find the people responsible," said Commissioner Charles Ramsey.
