Adams Street Bridge to close Monday after evening rush

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A long bridge project begins Monday night in Chicago's West Loop.

The Adams Street Bridge over the south branch of the Chicago River will close for reconstruction after 8 p.m. Monday. The city said the work will last 13 months.

Detours for cars and bikes will be set up. City officials said westbound traffic will be diverted to Wacker, where drivers can head south on Van Buren or north on Madison to cross the river. Then they can use Jefferson or Clinton to get back onto Adams.

Train passengers can be picked up or dropped off in two new areas: on Jackson or on Adams between Canal and Clinton.

Seven CTA bus routes will be affected: #1 Bronzeville/Union Station, #7 Harrison, #28 Stony Island, #121 Union/Streeterville Express, #126 Jackson, #151 Sheridan and #156 LaSalle.

Pedestrian access over the bridge to Union Station will stay open most of the time. Two 30-day closures are scheduled for later this year. Intermittent closures should also be expected.

Officials said of the locations tracked by the Chicago Department of Transportation, the Adams Street Bridge walkway is one of the busiest.
