Little Black Pearl artists' works on display at Union League Club

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Union League Club of Chicago hosts an impressive permanent art collection. Now, pieces from a group of young artists are hanging among the greats.

"I like the exposure and I like seeing what people think," said Daja Holmes, a student artist. "I hope they like it."

The artists are students at Little Black Pearl Art and Design Academy. First, they toured the Union League's collection, then they created their own work with the theme "I Am".

"I think of myself as courageous and brave and inspirational and creative," said Darian Johnson, a student artist.

"It was important just to be able to see historical works and then to be exhibiting in the same place as those historical works was an amazing experience for them," said Daria Amerik, a Little Black Pearl art teacher.

The Art Committee of the Union League invited Little Black Pearl students to show their work after a successful show last year. The members affirmed the students with praise and some purchases.

The members also benefit by seeing another side of Chicago's youth.

"It's a chance for our members on our end to also broaden their horizons. How do you think of young people you encounter on the streets? They're very deeply thinking people," said Kyrin Hobson, a Union League Club member.

"It makes me proud. I want my mom to be proud of me," said Lachari Garrett, a student artist.

The opening reception for "I Am" will be held Thursday evening. While the Union League is a private club, anyone who wishes to view the exhibition can contact the club's art director. The show runs through June 30.
