Verizon donates $35K to domestic violence groups in Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Verizon is taking old cell phones and turning them into cash to help stop domestic violence.

On Thursday, the company joined Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez to present checks to two domestic violence organizations in Chicago.

Chicago No More received $10,000 and the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network received $25,000.

The money comes from Verizon's Hopeline Program in which the company sells or refurbishes old phones, then donates the proceeds.

Verizon says it has donated more than $400,000 to organizations in Illinois.
