NYACK, N.Y. -- Eyewitness News shares a special tribute to eight brothers who served in World War II.

It took years to make this special recognition become a reality. But on this Veterans Day, eight brothers were honored for their service in World War II.

Everett Swann is the lone survivor and at 90 years old, he is proud of his family legacy.

"I want attention for my brothers. I could come last, but at least we can get some type of recognition," said Everett Swann, Sr., a veteran.

Everett enlisted in the army without telling his mother. So she was surprised when Everett's letter to report for duty at Fort Dix arrived in the mail.

"It wasn't so much that I joined, but I didn't say anything to her about it. I didn't ask, like, permission," Swann said.

As a mechanic in the 813 Battalion, he maintained amphibious vehicles serving in New Guinea, the Philippines, and finally Japan.

Everett Swann recalls the day he had to man a 50-caliber machine gun as his base faced a heavy air attack from the Japanese.

"God was with me. I was scared many a day, but I survived," Swann said.

At least six of the brothers enlisted and two others were drafted. Elmer Swann served in Europe where he was injured. His wife says this tribute is special.

"It's like a celebration and I think it's wonderful that they are being recognized," said Mary Swann, Elmer's wife.
