Beach hazard in effect for Chicago lakefront
CHICAGO (WLS) -- There are dangerous swimming conditions along Lake Michigan as strong winds whip up waves as high as five feet.
A beach hazard warning is in effect for Chicago's lakefront on Thursday.
Four lifeguards were on duty at the 31st Avenue Beach. The minute anyone went into the water, lifeguards were making sure people stayed safe.
When ABC7 first got to the beach, the flag was green which means it's okay to swim, but it has since been changed to yellow meaning take caution if going into the water.
The beach hazard goes on for the rest of the evening and includes waves three to five feet high which lead to dangerous rip currents, so it's best to stay out of the water.
The National Weather Service warns that strong rip currents can sweep swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. Structural currents form around piers and can drag swimmers under the pier.
The waves will not be as high Saturday or Sunday and it is expected to get warmer.
