Mother of 6 killed in crash remembered, driver still at large

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A family is pleading for justice after a mother of six was killed in a crash involving a suspect fleeing from police over the weekend, and who still remains at large.

Stacy Vaughn-Harrell, 47, was killed over the weekend when the vehicle she was in was struck by a car fleeing police. Now her family is united in grief, unable to understand why their loved one's life was stolen.

"This is something that I'll never get over. To lose a child is just not right," said Helen Vaughn, mother, through tears.

Harrell was with her 21-year-old daughter Kim Myers, who was seriously injured but survived.

Police said officers responding to reports of gunfire in the city's Englewood neighborhood had stopped the occupants of a Kia SUV. One man exited the vehicle, police said, but another hit the gas and sped away. Moments later, the SUV hit Harrell and Myers, who were in their Ford Focus.

The driver of the SUV ran from the scene. Police are still looking for them.

"There's so many people out here that do senseless things without even caring about others until you're on the end of that stick," said Joe Banks, Jr., Harrell's son.

Harrell, a married mother of six, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter is being treated for broken bones and internal injuries. Both of them were part of a large and loving family.

"If anybody knows anything, they need to say something," Vaughn said.

Police have questioned two passengers of the SUV. One of them faces a misdemeanor weapons charge. Police said they found a gun in the vehicle.
