Jennifer Wilkins, Macy's Trend Expert has a list of the top bridal registry items. Tips for the bride and groom

• Think ahead. Keep in mind that many of the items you select for your registry will be in your home for years to come. Although it's great to incorporate some trendy pieces, be sure that the lasting pieces, such as china, are something you can live with for years.

• China. Many brides and grooms have china handed down to them and may not need to register for complete sets. However, use your registry to accent the traditional pieces by choosing pieces with splashes of color and unique patterns.

• Upgrade your bedding and bath products. Registering for higher-end bedding or bath towels is a must. This is a great opportunity to get those plush bath towels you wouldn't necessarily purchase for yourself.

• Register in a timely manner. It's very easy to get excited and register too early. Stores change their assortments with the season, so we recommend registering three months prior to your wedding and continually checking in with all your registries for maintenance.

• Create a wide price range of items. You'll most likely have a variety of gift givers on your invite list, so be sure to include a variety of price ranges on your list.

• How many gifts should you include on your registry? It's wise to register for 1.5 gifts per guest. You'll want to provide options not only for your wedding, but also yours showers and pre-wedding parties.

Tips for buying a wedding gift:

• Use the couple's wedding registry. You may think you know the couple's style, but it's always safe to purchase from the registry.

• Make it personal. Pair something off the couple's registry with an additional gift that will remind them of you. Along with their steak knives, you could order steaks to be delivered a month after their wedding. You could get the couple a subscription to Food & Wine along with a couple pieces of their stemware.

• If nothing on the registry moves you, ask for help. Ask a sales associate to review the couple's registry and suggest something that would compliment the couple's wish list.

• Don't forget the receipt. Whether you're purchasing from the registry or not, don't forget the gift receipt. Couples change their minds, and you want to make it as simple for them as possible after the wedding.

• There is no formula on what to spend. Just as every couple is different, so is every gift giver.
