A short time later, a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in Rogers Park.
On Saturday, police were investigating what appears to be the suicide of the suspect in both murders.
Troy Cameron, 22, was shot and killed just before 10 p.m. Friday at 315 W. Chicago Ave. His relatives say he worked as a greeter at the Walgreens, a job that was part security, part customer service.
Wanted for the murder was 33-year-old Dante Simmons of Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood. Later in the night, he was found dead in an alley with a gunshot wound.
Simmons was also wanted by police for a second shooting on the Far North Side, which killed a 15-year-old Skokie boy.
On Saturday night, a teddy bear and condolence notes sat outside the drugstore where Cameron was gunned down.
"He didn't deserve it, not at all," said Cameron's friend, Dannie Smith. "That was crazy for somebody like that to do that to him."
Police are still investigating the motive for these shootings, but relatives of Troy Cameron say they have been told by friends that the shooting may have involved a disgruntled former co-worker.
"He was saying that it was supposed to have been an ex-employee and he got caught stealing or something, and they fired him," said Cameron's cousin, Christopher Crumb. "He supposedly [had] been calling there and threatening them."
Walgreens has not confirmed that Dante Simmons, the alleged gunman, worked for them but said, "We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the employee's family and we are providing information to the police and doing all we can to assist them."
Cameron leaves behind a 2-year-old son. On Friday, relatives said, Cameron applied for a job at the Ford plant on the South Side. Relatives said he worked hard and had a bright future.
"He was a free-hearted person," said Cameron's aunt, Luella Pickens. "He would care for everybody. He always tried to talk to people and do the right thing."
