Americans spending less on prescription medicines

For the first time in decades, Americans are spending less on prescription medicines.

A report from the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics says total spending dipped by 1-percent in 2012, as consumers looking to save money continued to cut back on the use of health care services.

They also benefited from a surge of new, inexpensive generic versions of some widely-used medications.
