While out on bond, investigators suspect he assaulted and bludgeoned a 22-year-old woman to death.
Shortly afterward, Maes disappeared, possibly fleeing to Mexico. He has since been charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
The FBI believes Maes may have returned to Chicago because he has family ties in the city.
Officials are renewing calls for information about his whereabouts.
