Officials say more than 16,000 families, individuals and businesses in Illinois have been approved for federal aid, following September's flooding.

In all, nearly $39 million in federal funds will go to victims in northeast Illinois. The majority of the money is going to 15,000 households in Chicago and Cook County.

Seven northeastern Illinois counties were declared federal disaster areas after record rain fell September 13 and 14.
