Foxwoods creeps closer to Strawbridge's

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - April 22, 2009 The City Planning Commission on Tuesday approved rezoning the former Strawbridge & Clothier department store at 8th and Market streets to allow Foxwoods to open a casino there.

The meeting was packed with anti-casino activists. Many said the location isn't much better than Foxwoods' choice last October of the Gallery shopping mall two blocks away.

Supporters say the Strawbridge's location would have less of an impact on the city's Chinatown community.

Foxwoods plans to convert the historic department store's second and third floors to a casino. The first floor would be rented out to restaurants and retail outlets.
