Village approves first-ever property taxes

December 22, 2009 (SCHAUMBURG, Ill.) Schaumburg trustees voted six to zero to approve the village's first-ever property tax.

Schaumburg had avoided a property tax because the giant Woodfield Mall and other businesses have been paying the village sizable sales taxes.

However the economic downturn and rising payments to pension funds left Schaumburg projecting a $17.6 million deficit.

Property tax opponents suggested cuts in spending.

Village officials say additional spending cuts would jeopardize police and fire protection.
