In Illinois, African-American babies are twice as likely to die from sleep-related causes as other babies, according to a new study by Children's Memorial Research Center in Chicago.Researchers analyzed Illinois data on infant deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, unintentional suffocation in bed and undetermined causes.

They found most of the infant deaths occurred when an infant was in an unsafe sleep situation, such as sharing a bed with an adult or sleeping alone on a couch.

Experts say infants should go to sleep on their backs in a safety-approved crib with a firm mattress.
