Volunteers show 'Chicago Cares'

More than 6,000 volunteers painted, planted flowers, created murals, and otherwise spruced up 41 Chicago schools serving 30,000 students Saturday.One of those schools is Sheridan Academy on the South Side.

The occasion was the 17th annual Chicago Cares Serve-A-Thon, the city's largest day of service.

Public schools CEO Ron Huberman said students appreciate that people care enough about them to improve their schools. Huberman spoke at the opening ceremony.

Other speakers included Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.
