An environmental group has sued the Food and Drug Administration, claiming it failed to regulate toxic chemicals found in antimicrobial soap and other products.

At issue are two common ingredients: triclosan and triclocarban.

The National Resources Defense Council alleges that the chemicals can damage reproductive organs, sperm quality and production of thyroid and sex hormones.

The plaintiffs say the FDA violated federal law in its delay over establishing safe conditions of use. The group wants the FDA to finish its study on the conditions of use by a specific date.
