Study: Placebo pills help patients

December 23, 2010

Researchers gave pills labeled "placebo" to patients with irritable bowel syndrome. They also reminded the patients the pills did -not- contain medicine.

But nearly 60 percent of the patients reported they felt better after knowingly taking the placebos twice a day compared to 35 percent of patients who did not get any treatment.

The study appears in the Public Library of Science journal Plos one.
