Sugar pills can help patients feel better -- even if they are fully aware that they are getting fake medicine

Researchers gave pills labeled "placebo" to patients with irritable bowel syndrome. They also reminded the patients the pills did -not- contain medicine.

But nearly 60 percent of the patients reported they felt better after knowingly taking the placebos twice a day compared to 35 percent of patients who did not get any treatment.

The study appears in the Public Library of Science journal Plos one.
