Nearly 7,000 families on Chicago's South Side received a free bag of groceries Monday.

The bags were handed out by Save-A-Lot grocery store workers. Each contained fresh fruits and vegetables.

Save-A-Lot delivered these groceries to celebrate the opening of five new stores in communities across the South Side.

The stores hope to help to eliminate so-called food deserts throughout the area.
