Report: Ill. cigarette tax could go up

The Illinois tax on a pack of cigarettes could go up by a dollar, while the Illinois Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of a major public works program.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Senate President John Cullerton intends to call for the tax increase to fund the current road construction season in case the Supreme Court doesn't rule in the state's favor.

An appellate court found that the law authorizing the $31 billion construction project violated the state's constitution because it contained too many topics, such as a liquor tax increase and legalization of video poker.
