Alderman Ed Burke is proposing an ordinance that would allow parents to block teens from texting while driving.

The ordinance would require all cell phones sold in Chicago after January first to be equipped with a feature that allows an authorized user to disable text services in a vehicle traveling over 5 miles an hour.

Texting while driving is illegal in Chicago. But a recent poll by the state toll highway authority found 40 percent of those surveyed did not know about the ban.
