State police launch initiative to stop distractive driving

May 6, 2011 (CHICAGO)

They'll monitor violations of the so-called "move over" and "distracted driving" laws on the Dan Ryan, Kennedy and Eisenhower expressways.

This comes more than a year after Illinois State Trooper Starlena Wilson was hit by a driver who was distracted by her cell phone. Wilson survived the accident and is back on the job. She says she's a living reminder to all drivers to stay focused on the road.

"The driver's seat of a moving motor vehicle is not the place to send or receive messages -- it can save a life," Wilson said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted drivers killed more than 6,000 people last year.
