Mindful meditation could ease bowel problems

May 9, 2011 (CHICAGO)

A new study finds that mindful meditation resulted in a more than 38 percent reduction in symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. That far surpassed a nearly 12 percent reduction for women with IBS who participated in a traditional support group.

The study's authors say the practice based on Buddhist meditative techniques "empowers" patients to deal with an illness that is difficult to treat. In addition, it was found meditation helped reduce psychological distress and improved quality of life.
