Jordan Aubey, 27, grew up in Winfield and is now a television reporter in Joplin. He is back in town recovering from a broken hip that required surgery and metal rods implanted in his leg.
Aubey's apartment building was destroyed. He took cover in his bathtub.
"The windows crashed in. I was still thinking to myself, okay, this thing might still divert. But then my ears started popping badly and then I realized, okay, it's here," Aubey told ABC7.
The number of people missing in Joplin has now dropped to 10. More than 100 people were killed.
