The trooper had stopped on the Eisenhower Expressway to help a driver whose car had broken down. He was inside his squad car when it was struck by a third car.
The driver of the stalled car, Renzo Ruiz says the officer saved his life and those of his family.
"I was sitting here and the cop told us to wait inside the car because people don't know how to drive. And a few minutes later someone hit him and it was honest to God scary," Ruiz said.
The crash set off a chain reaction involving two other cars. The trooper and two other people suffered minor injuries.
Police say Donald Filmore of Hanover Park was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving too fast for conditions.
