Watermelon truck rolls over on I-65

July 19, 2011

The accident closed the right and middle lanes.

Around 9:27 a.m., a 2001 Freightliner semi with box-trailer was on I-65 northbound when the driver says a car cut him off and braked. Police say the 37-year-old driver from Minnesota was coming into the curve too fast with the load of watermelon improperly secured.

The semi rolled onto to its passenger side. The 40,000 pounds of watermelon were inside the trailer. The load originated in Georgia and was headed to Morris, Illinois.

The driver suffered minor injuries, as did his passenger, a 40-year-old woman from Florida. They both refused medical treatment.

The right and middle lanes of the I-65 northbound to the I-80 westbound ramp were scheduled to be closed until about 3:30 p.m.

The driver was cited for speeding too fast to avoid a collision and insecure load.
