It happened about 7:20 p.m. Friday across the street from Maria Saucedo Scholastic Academy at 24th and California.
Police say the girl, identified by relatives as Jessica Martinez, was outdoors playing when a gunman opened fire from across the street. The girl reportedly was on the parkway with her uncle when she got caught in the crossfire between two or more people.
No one was arrested on the scene. The people who were involved in the shooting apparently got away on foot, and police canvassed the area trying to find them.
The 12-year-old girl was shot in the side and was transported in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she is still being treated. A cousin said Saturday that the victim was doing better.
One witness to the shooting told ABC7 that unfortunately, this kind of thing happens in the neighborhood pretty regularly.
This shooting comes two days after a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed, as well.
Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call police.
