The Milk Processor Education Program says that sugar in fat-free and low-fat chocolate milk is being reduced by 38 percent.
Cartons of flavored milk will contain fewer than 150 calories and 22 grams of total sugar this school year, which is only 31 more calories than in white milk.
Milk provides calcium, vitamin D and potassium, which are critical for children's diet and development. Some school districts have removed flavored milk as part of efforts to reduce consumption of unhealthy drinks at school.
