Weak economy taking toll on nation's seniors

November 9, 2011

According to the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, a number of financially strapped older adults are drinking and smoking more.

Researchers looked at more than 2,300 Americans aged 65 or older. Those with money problems were 30 percent more likely to take up heavy drinking compared to others who are financially stable.

Experts say, if the current economic climate continues, we can expect to see an increase in alcohol and smoking use and abuse, especially in this population.
