Cancer rates have dropped 1.8 percent in men and 1.6 percent in women each year between 2004 and 2008, according to the American Cancer Society's annual report on cancer statistics.

Advances in cancer screening and treatment have prevented more than 1 million total deaths from cancer since the early 1990's.

This year, the American Cancer Society projects 1.6 million people will be newly diagnosed with some form of the disease, and more than 500,000 will die from it.
