Plainfield native Melissa McCarthy got a nod from the Academy for her role in the R-rated movie ''Bridesmaids'' with a nomination for best supporting actress.

McCarthy, 41, plays the role of Megan, the groom's sister and a loud and aggressive, less-than-feminine bridesmaid in the movie. She stars along the side of Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph and Ellie Kemper. In published reports, the actress said she looked to her no-nonsense Midwestern roots for inspiration in that character. Watch her Windy City LIVE interview on "Bridesmaids."

She also plays Molly Flynn in the CBS TV series "Mike & Molly," which is based on a Chicago couple.

McCarthy grew up in suburban Plainfield, Ill. She attended St. Francis Academy High School in Joliet, graduating in 1988. Her cousin is actress Jenny McCarthy.
