New guidelines for monitoring diabetes

Patients with type-2 diabetes have probably heard it over and over again: Keep that blood sugar level under control.

Now, some new guidelines will be cutting patients more slack, proclaiming one level no longer fits all. That means doctors and patients will be encouraged to come up with a number that best fits their situation.

Experts now say it is unrealistic to expect everyone with diabetes to have the same goals. This gives doctors and patients permission to focus on creating the right combination of diet, exercise, medication and glucose testing.

The guidelines are a joint effort between the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
