Festivals highlighting busy Chicago weekend

June 9, 2012 (CHICAGO)

It may have felt more like mid-July than June today, but it was perfect weather for a day out at the beach.

"This is his first time at the beach and he had a blast," said Stacey Carroll. "The sand, the digging, the cold water, it's a great way to cool off."

Cooling off is exactly what some relay runners needed. Crossing the finish line at Montrose Beach capped off two days and one night of running that started 200 miles away in Madison, Wisc.

"You run, you barely sleep, you eat a little and then you run more," said runner Diane Kaeser. "It's non-stop and we love every minute of it, ready to do it next year.

For those in search of a different kind of refreshment, Midsommerfest in Andersonville is on this weekend. The popular street festival offers great eats and great entertainment.

"It's summer," said Brad Karsh. "It's outdoors in Chicago, it's seeing people, it's eating great food, it's visiting great stores, that's what it's all about.

And if art is your thing, over 260 artists are displaying their wares in Old Town Saturday and Sunday.

"The crowd has been really great," said artist Marcus Ryan. "This is my clientele for the most part, a young vibrant clientele. What they being out. I shoot wine, cigars and scotches and everyone has a cup in their hand."

Finally, what better way to round out the day than with Blues Fest. Floyd Taylor closed off the evening in front of a packed crowd in Grant Park.
