Study: Electronic files could help in medical records

According to Australian researchers, medical tests often fall through the cracks when patients are discharged or moved to a nursing home.

One expert says the situation also exists here in the United States.

Failure to follow up on a test can result in a risk for patients since important information that might need to be acted on does not get looked at. Electronic medical records might help by flagging test results that have not been reviewed.

Patients can also play a role by keeping track of their tests and specifically asking for results. There's more on the report in the journal "Archives of Internal Medicine".
