Eye drops, nasal decongestants dangerous when ingested, FDA warns

October 26, 2012

The FDA is cautioning parents about the dangers of eye drops and nasal decongestant sprays.

The warning comes after identifying 96 cases where children became seriously ill after accidentally ingesting these over-the-counter products

The drops and sprays are sold by various brand names, as well as generics and store brands. They are not required to have child resistant closures.

While no deaths have been reported, more than half of the cases required hospitalization due to nausea, lethargy or coma.
