Firefighters battle West Side building fire

December 7, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Firefighters have yet to figure out exactly how the blaze started on West 16th in the Lawndale neighborhood.

However, they say that the heaviest concentration of fire, smoke and heat seem to be coming from the second floor of the two-story building.

The building has apparently been vacant for the most part for several years.

There was a convenience store that remained open until a few months ago. It, however, now is also closed.

Firefighters said they have no reason to believe that anyone was inside the building, but they also have yet to figure out exactly how this fire started.

As of early Friday evening, it was too unstable for them to go inside to begin to search and investigate.

Most of the roof was completely destroyed in the fire and has collapsed. The walls are in danger of collapse as well without the roof.

No one was injured in the blaze and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
