Legislation allowing the carrying of concealed weapons that could take effect next week includes a provision giving cities ten days to enact prohibitions on assault-style weapons.
But interviews and information from gun-rights groups like the Illinois State Rifle Association indicate that only four Chicago-area communities have adopted prohibitions on semi-automatic guns and high-capacity ammunition feeders.
Nearly 30 communities have put it on the agenda. Fourteen have decided against a ban. It's still under consideration in ten.
Gov. Pat Quinn's amendatory veto of the concealed carry bill suggested changes including ongoing local government power to ban assault weapons. Lawmakers are poised to override the veto next week.
