5 arrested after $35K UIC music burglary

October 20, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Five males ranging in age from 17 to 24 are accused of breaking into a building on Harrison. Police say most of the equipment was recovered Friday after the suspects tried to sell it at a pawn shop. UIC says the suspects are not students.

The five roommates face a total of 17 charges. The alleged burglaries took place between Sept. 25 and Oct. 14

Three of the five are charged with criminal trespass for breaking into a UIC building, causing more than $50,000 in damages, which the school received in state funding.

The group allegedly broke into the building and broke into wooden lockers which held the equipment. All five confessed, prosecutors said. The burglary was caught on surveillance cameras.

The suspects are banned from the UIC campus. The five live in the 400 block of South Morgan Street.

Cook County judge Israel Desierto gave the five a 10,000 I-bond with electronic monitoring. None have criminal records.
